Every year I debate going 2 SPs with my first two picks. 14 team categories h2h. I know pitchers are more injury prone but with our setup pitching seems to be a premium. I have no idea where I’m drafting from yet out of the 14 positions but if I’m near the end of the 1st round I’m tempted to grab pitching early. Most teams roll 1 bench hitter and then rest bench being extra SP, some even punt saves and use SP who have RP eligibility. Every year it seems like 20-30  SP are off the board before 4th round is over, most of the time more, full rounds have been pitchers.

guess the question is would it be smart to do in a h2h category style league and still be able to build a some what respectable hitting team or would I be behind the 8 ball in hitting – then again it’s me vs 1 team week to week so it might not matter.

If I invest early on pitching I would probably grab another pitcher within the first 5 picks. Doesn’t make much sense to invest early pitching and then wait 7 rounds to get a 3rd SP that would be dog meat.

    Sorry for the long post.

With 14 teams and about 10 SP per team. Needless to say the free agent market for pitchers to stream are terrible. They almost always hurt your ratios instead of providing anything worthwhile.

If it’s head to head you don’t need balance. You need to dominate 8-9 categories so if you’re weak on starting pitchers you can load up on bats and relievers. Keep in mind a lot of mid to late round starters broke out last season like Bauer, Snell, Buehler, wheeler, clevinger, etc. decide what categories to punt and draft accordingly.

Thanks for talking in greater detail about this today on the podcast.

Makes sense but does it change your approach if all your categories are counted for overall standings.

It isn’t like football where if you beat the guy your playing your awarded 1 win. So if i win 8-4 the first week and then i follow up that up with a 4-8 loss the next. I am sitting 12-12 on the season and probably sitting middle of the pack on the overall standings.

Best record in ’18 was 140-97-15. Only thing i am scared about if i punt say saves or stolen bases i am starting the season 0-42 out of the gate.

With a 21 week schedule i would be 42 categories if i punted saves/stolen bases.

Am i still looking at this wrong?

Yes, it’s wrong. You’re not a lock to lose the category every week. That’s just the blueprint for the draft. If you can get two closers cheap on waivers, then you have saves. The goal is to dominate 8-10 categories. Don’t have to do it, but an idea.
